Affected by her parents’ highly publicized divorce, Isabel grows up isolated and alone, with a resolve to never fall in love and repeat their mistakes.
When Jesse Cain enters her life, she falls hopelessly in love with him, and every sadness she’s ever felt is washed away by his intensity and passion. But people change as they grow up. Things can never stay the same forever.
Jesse and Isabel fight to stay together, determined to hold on to what they once had. Isabel wonders if a second love can ever be enough to make her forget her first.
Tabby's Review:
First off let me start by saying after finishing
The Light in the Wound I was an emotional mess. I cried so much while reading
this book, I believe my children started questioning my sanity. This story was
beyond powerful, a heart-wrenching, emotional roller coaster, that kept me
entranced until the very end. The pure, raw emotion that this book exudes is
astounding. The characters, and their emotions felt so real. Every emotion
Isabel felt during her journey, I felt, every tear she cried, I cried. In my opinion
The Light in the Wound is a story of making mistakes, and making some more,
it's about doing what makes you happy even if it hurts other people, it's about
following your heart, yet holding on to the past. The Light in the Wound, shows
us that first loves never die, you always hold on to the memories and
experiences of a first love. First loves and every love that follow forever
impact who you are today and who you will be in the future.
The Light in the Wound was written so well, the
story flowed, the characters developed, there was suspense, emotion, drama and
at times a little laughter. It encompassed everything that a great book
is. I admit through most of the book I was Team Alex all the way but to hear those emotions coming from Jesse broke my heart, like completely devastated me. So, I will now and forever be Team Jelex, but I could easily be pulled to Team Jesse.
This book goes on my list of books that impact me
long after I have read them. I recommend The Light in the Wound to anyone who
has ever had a first love (because everyone has). If I could rate it higher I
would but no amount of hearts could describe this book.
Favorite Quotes:
"Please love me, please love me again. You did it before, please try to remember what you said- you promised you'd never say goodbye"- Jesse
"You asked me for my heart. And I'm giving it to you. Without fear, without condition. I'm sorry that it's taken me awhile, but it's all yours now. I love you and only you." -Isabel
“I’m
going to spend every night of my life kissing away your memories of him. I’m
going to find places he never touched, places he never kissed and our first
times will be a thousand times sweeter than your first times with him. Isabel,
you are the love of my life.”- Alex
Jessica's Review:
I sit here and am still
baffled by this book. I can't believe it is a debut novel! I am a sucker for
love stories. And this is so much more than that. It's a love story and a story
about discovering who you are as a person and growing up. This book is packed
with emotion. Christine Brae brings her characters to life and every emotion
they go through you will feel it. The Light In The Wound follows Isabel's
journey from childhood through adulthood. You feel like Isabel is personally
sitting there telling you her story.
From the prologue itself
you are left wondering...What just happened? Who was that? And immediately
thrown back into present time without any more details given.
First Isabel meets Jesse
and he has insecurities because Isabel is from a wealthy family and is
beautiful. But then there is Alex and we watch their relationship bloom from
friends to more. Jesse does make a reappearance and you follow Isabel as she
learns what love is right for you. First loves or true loves or are they the
same? I don't want to say too much and giveaway the details as they are a key
role in Isabel's journey. She comes from a broken home where she isn't really
loved to grow and find someone who is absolutely in love with her.
Although the book
started out slow for me, once I got past the first few chapters I couldn't put
it down. Make sure you have your tissues ready especially the last 15-20%. This
book will leave you wanting more and waiting impatiently for the second one.
Favorite Quote: “I don’t need weeks or
months or years to figure out what my future might be like with you. I need
weeks and months and years to be with you.” –Alex
Teaser:
“Thank you, baby,” he
whispered, as he reached across the table to take my hand. We were dining at
our favorite restaurant one night after a late meeting.
“For what?” I lovingly
rubbed my thumb on his wrist.
“For being here with
me.”
I was so engrossed in
the conversation going on behind me that I didn’t respond.
“What?” He chuckled as
he caught me smiling at him from across the booth.
“Nothing. These women
right behind me are talking about you. The one facing you is gushing,” I
whispered, amused.
This had become an
acceptable fact of dating Alex. Even before you saw his face, there was no use
hiding his body under anything he wore. His clothes just hung on him so
perfectly, like a runway model. That night, he wore a white casual button down
shirt over low-slung distressed jeans that had the perfect flair to match his
canvas designer sneakers. His short hair showcased his perfect jaw, his full
lips, his round blue eyes. His clean cut look was tempered by the stubble that
lined his jaw and his chin.
“Come sit by me, please.
You feel so far away.” His eyes were dancing like little blue lights on a
Christmas tree. I stood up, walked around and slid into the booth with him. It
was like he gave me his consent to claim my territory. He leaned against me,
closing the gap between us as his mouth skimmed my earlobe.
“Much better,” he murmured. “You know, I don’t care about
anyone else but you.”
